A Practical Guide for Project Professionals
If you work in or around project management, you’ve probably heard the name PRINCE2® more than once. But what exactly is it, and why should you consider getting trained in it? In this blog, we’ll break down what PRINCE2 is, the benefits of learning it, and what to expect from the exams—all in plain English.
What is PRINCE2®?
PRINCE2® (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is one of the most widely used project management methodologies in the world. Developed in the UK and now adopted globally, PRINCE2 provides a structured approach to managing projects of all sizes and types.
It’s based on seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes, offering a clear, step-by-step framework for delivering successful projects. Unlike some methods that focus mainly on tools or techniques, PRINCE2 is process-driven, making it especially useful in organizations that need consistent, repeatable outcomes across different teams or departments.
Why Train in PRINCE2®?
Whether you’re just starting out in project management or looking to strengthen your credentials, PRINCE2 training can offer real advantages:
✅ Recognized Worldwide
PRINCE2 is a globally recognized certification, respected by employers in both public and private sectors. Having PRINCE2 on your CV shows you understand how to run a project in a logical, efficient way.
✅ Structured Yet Flexible
PRINCE2 is often praised for being methodical but adaptable. It doesn’t assume one size fits all—it encourages tailoring to fit the size and complexity of your project.
✅ Great for Teams and Individuals
PRINCE2 provides a common language for project teams, which can drastically reduce misunderstandings and confusion. And for individuals, it builds confidence in managing projects in a clear, structured way.
✅ Works Well With Agile
You don’t have to choose between Agile and PRINCE2. Many organizations combine them to get the rigour of PRINCE2 with the responsiveness of Agile, especially in fast-paced or innovative environments.
What PRINCE2® Training Involves
Training is usually delivered over a few days (either in a classroom or online), covering all the core principles, themes, and processes. You’ll learn how to:
- Plan and initiate a project
- Define roles and responsibilities
- Manage risks and issues
- Deliver projects on time and within budget
- Close projects in a controlled way
Courses are often very practical, with plenty of examples, case studies, and exercises to reinforce learning.
The PRINCE2® Exams
There are two main certifications:
1. PRINCE2 Foundation
This is your starting point. It tests your understanding of the basic principles and terminology. It’s multiple choice, closed book, and usually taken at the end of your course.
Ideal for: Project team members, coordinators, or anyone supporting project delivery.
2. PRINCE2 Practitioner
This is the next level up. It tests whether you can apply PRINCE2 in a real-world project scenario. The exam is multiple choice (scenario-based), open book, and more challenging.
Ideal for: Project Managers or those taking on significant project responsibilities.
You don’t need any previous project management experience to take Foundation. To sit the Practitioner exam, you must have passed Foundation (or hold certain other qualifications like PMP® or CAPM®).
In a Nutshell…
Training in PRINCE2 can sharpen your project management skills, boost your career prospects, and help your team deliver better results. It gives you a reliable framework that you can tailor to suit your projects—whatever your industry or sector.
If you’re serious about project management, PRINCE2 is a smart investment in your professional development.
